Reading the light novels was frustrating to me because there is such good work in this that's ultimately let down by this need to implement it into the harem genre, and badly. The second is what I'm going to talk about, Strike the Blood a vampire harem that I've watched the first season and read two volumes of the light novels, and having done that I can honestly say it is a damn good premise and story that is utterly ruined by this approach to the medium. So that was my introduction and not a good one, but it did set a baseline for how low to set my expectations. And none of that comes up in the anime at all, as it doubles down on the Harem aspect, over sexualizing its characters, toning down the quite brutal battles of the manga.
Not only is it badly written as well as having the camera constantly looking upskirts, it utterly guts the far superior manga that actually distances itself from being a harem manga, and can be generally called a Shounen Battle manga. The first anime I watched when I first got into anime was the atrocious garbage that is Rosario Vampire. However, I have sat through two anime which kinda reinforces my hatred of this genre. However, being completely honest, I avoid these like the plague so a lot of my complaints can be chalked up to a taste thing.
It's not that I don't hate the concept, but what I don't like is how formulaic it's become, and how it feels shoehorned into narrative concepts, and how terrible it is at romance and character writing.
If you've followed me for a while you'd know I really, really hate Harems.
